Abstract
Approximating discrete distributions with continuous probability density functions (PDFs) is a widely used statistical technique, especially valuable for analysing large datasets. This work introduces a novel extension of the classical Pearson system by adapting it to fit continuous PDFs to q-discrete distributions, a class of models that generalize traditional discrete distributions. While q-discrete distributions have attracted growing interest due to their flexibility and wide-ranging applications, the problem of approximating them using continuous distributions remains underexplored. To address this, we propose a unified framework based on the generalized Pearson differential equation to construct continuous approximations that closely match the behaviour of q-discrete models. This approach offers an alternative way to study and interpret q-discrete data through continuous representations. It therefore provides a useful contribution to the theoretical treatment of these models as well as to their potential applications.
